The Crouch End Project has been working with local businesses and community groups since 2007. It was created in response to a growing number of shop vacancies. With a little investigation, it became clear that as people’s lives were getting busier the internet and larger out of town shopping centres were increasingly taking custom from smaller town centre businesses. With bigger marketing budgets and parking facilities they were able to keep them away. The town centre was no longer a ‘local and convenient’ way to shop.
The problem: how can small, independent businesses with little resource stand up to this mighty onslaught? The solution: local businesses to invest in creating a brand for the whole town centre, much like an interesting department store under which all businesses and local organizations can operate individually whilst presenting one easy access point to customers. This creates an opportunity for real engagement with the community. Critical to this is great design and production.
The Crouch End project launched with a range of late night events, drawing customers back into the community and supported by a range of popular merchandise (Crouch End Shopping bag, Crouch End Rocks t-shirts), a loyalty scheme and a website. Over the years there have been many events and initiatives (Fashion Week, Green Weekend, Christmas events, Pop-up shops to name a few) and now there is a fantastic new website and Crouch End App.
Crouch End has delivered a town centre model that has successfully brought customers back into the high street by giving them good reasons to visit, simplifying access and adding value to that experience. Customers can browse their local high st from the comfort of their own home and then enjoy the all-important personal service in store.
